At the beginning of the year I listed this as one of my most anticipated films of 2013, and as someone who read and loved the book and maybe, possibly has an unwavering adoration of everything Leonardo DiCaprio, it was inevitable that I would see Luhrman’s new Gatsby as soon as it came out.
For me, everything about this film was spot on. From the rolling of the opening credits I knew no other director could re-imagine Gatsby in such a perfectly suited, fantastical manner. I’m someone who keeps an eye out for cinematography that I like, and only Luhrman’s colour and symmetry odd choices of focus and close-ups, transitions and old vintage clips could recapture the story in exactly the right way. It just all worked.
Speaking of artistic choices, the soundtrack was a complete winner for me. I could understand the reservations some people had concerning a roaring twenties to the back drop of Jay Z, but every song seemed placed precisely and appropriately. It was less disconcerting to be taken out of an era, but rather exemplifying of the lavish, glamorous, New York setting. The lyrics of money and beauty, with the kaleidoscope affect of the cinematography made me believe every scene was a part of Gatsby’s parties. It worked, very well. My favourite song, of course, was Lana Del Rey’s “Young And Beautifu”- that girl’s voice was made for this.
It goes without saying that Leo stole the show for me. I hadn’t expected to gain anything new from the story from the film that I didn’t from the book, because that’s generally the nature of things, but Leo’s Gatsby evoked so much more sympathy from me that his character became a whole new entity in which to examine. He understood the character, and it showed. (But he’s always been a favourite actor of mine. I’m biased. But rightly so.)
The casting was generally very good. Mulligan was a wonderful Daisy, who’s chemistry with Gatsby had me believing in the characters for the entire film, but Maguire’s Nick left something to be desired. The inclusion of his narration to a doctor irked me slightly, as this is a deviation from the original text and seemed pretty pointless, but it did serve to include the famous last lines of the book.
I thought the film’s costumes and effects- especially the setting and recapturing of place (in particular the Valley of Ashes)- was incredible, in just how lavish everything was. I thought the film was appropriately grand and overly artistic, and the dancing and music was befittingly decadent. The style reminisced the themes of the movie, which I loved not only because it was clever, but because it was pretty to watch.
I would definitely recommend this film and watch it again myself; even to those who haven’t read that book it is captivating and beautiful, if not for the wonderful Leo.
